Good question! There are a couple factors you should know about, cue the Shear Theory! Longevity is determined by angle. Lower angles produce sharp shears that last 6-12 months. Higher angles produce razor-sharp shears that last 4-8 months. Both are VERY sharp and intended for different parts of the cutting process. An average stylist has 4 go-to shears. Let’s start with the 2 shears used for foundational and detail work. A shear that has low-angle sharpening is best for building the foundation on wet hair or when blunt-cutting because of the way it holds strands in place. Detail work on dry hair or techniques like slide-cutting and point-cutting are performed best by shears with high-angle sharpening because of the way it seamlessly glides through strands. The other 2 go-to shears are typically for removing bulk or texturizing in different amounts based on teeth. These are sharpened with a higher angle but typically last 8-12 months because they are used less frequently.
We guarantee precision when it comes to sharpening your tools because we don’t use a one-size-fits-all method. We are manufacturer certified and trained. We can distinguish among all shear varieties such as Japanese convex, European bevel and hybrid models. If you are curious about your shear specs, just ask us!
